Dard Hunter Records the First Use of Paper in Italy

In Papermaking: The History and Technique of an Ancient Craft, 2nd. ed. (1947) p. 473 Dard Hunter wrote that the first known use of paper in Italy was in the register written by the Genoese notary Giovanni Scriba, dated 1154-1166. He thought that this particular paper had been imported "from the East," and mentioned that no other specimens of paper were found in Italy until 1276, the date of the first mention of the Fabriano paper mills.
