Richard Aungerville, commonly known as Richard de Bury, a Benedictine monk at Durham Cathedral, and treasurer and chancellor of England under Edward III, wrote Philobiblon, perhaps the earliest treatise on the value of preserving neglected or decaying manuscripts, on building a library, and on book collecting.
