McCulloch & Pitts Publish One of the First Studies of Pattern Recognition

In 1947 American logician Walter Pitts and psychiatrist neuroscientist Warren S. McCulloch published "How we Know Universals. The Perception of Auditory and Visual Forms," Bulletin of Mathematical Biophysics 9 (1947) 127-147. In this expansion of McCulloch and Pitts' "A Logical Calculus of the Ideas Immanent in Nervous Activity" (1943) Pitts and McCulloch implemented their notions by showing how the anatomy of the cerebral cortex might accommodate the identification of form independent of its angular size in the image, and other such operations in perception.
