Two steam engines generated electricity only for lighting. These powered many machines through an elaborate system of cable drives. At this point in time the power grid was not sufficient in Vienna to provide electric lighting for this facility, and it definitely could not power the many machines. This situation appears to be the same as described in the technical report on the operation published in 1894.
