In 1873 Annie Carey, author of various works for children and young people, published The History of a Book. This was, remarkably, the best popular illustrated account of all aspects of book production issued up to its date. The book was particularly clear as to the distinction between hand-presses, which continued to be used, and machine presses. It was also excellent in its depiction of bookbinding machinery. The original cloth binding on the book was also distinctive for containing images of a typesetter in front of a type case, a printer operating a hand press, printers operating a machine press, and a woman book binder at a sewing frame. As of October 2018 I had not obtained any information regarding the author. The work was issued by "Cassell, Petter, & Galpin, London, Paris, and New York." According to its last page of text, it was printed by Cassell, Petter, & Galpin, Belle Sauvage Works, London, E.C."
