Portrait photograph of master printer Jules Claye, c. 1860, attributed to Pierre Petit.

I was very pleased to add this beautiful photograph of the prolific Parisian printer Jules Claye to my collection. The portrait, which has been attributed to photographer Pierre Petit measures 270 x 195mm. Claye operated a large establishment and printed quality books and periodicals of many kinds, but he seems to be most remembered for printing the works of his long-time friend, Victor Hugo.

As an indication of the size of Claye's establishment, I read in an article on the French Alauzet high speed printing machines published on p. 75 of  the July 30, 1864 issue of l'Illustration that Claye's printers operated twelve of Alauzet's printing machines of different types. These presumably would have been in addition to whatever hand presses or other smaller printing machines that they might have run.
