This portrait of the Reverend Francis William Pitt Greenwood by lithographer William Sharp is thought to be the first chromolithograph produced in the United States. "An Englishman, Sharp had experimented with color lithography in London before immigrating to Boston in 1839. European and British printers were making strides in color lithography, but the technique was virtually unknown in America. Seeking to establish himself in Boston as an artist and innovative printmaker, Sharp produced  this portrait of the popular Unitarian minister of King’s Chapel. The  text below the title proudly proclaims that it was  “Printed in Colours by Wm. Sharp.”  Although modern critics  have  referred to this image as a chromolithograph, it was most likely produced as a lithotint with colors printed from a single rather than  multiple  stones" (http://cdm.bostonathenaeum.org/cdm/ref/collection/p16057coll42/id/19).
