On March 11, 1834 the London Union of Compositors was founded. From the Jubilee of the London Society of Compositors....A Brief Record of Events prior to and since its re-establishment in 1848 (1898) we learn that the organization operated informally as early as the late 18th century, was established in 1834, and re-constituted in 1848. Among its main purposes was negotiating decent wages for the typesetting employees of London newspapers.
