Perhaps it was coincidental that in September 1877, just as the Caxton Quatercentenary Exhibition closed in London, that the Bayrische Gewerbemuseum in Nuremberg held an exhibition of about 2000 books and prints documenting the history of printing. The director of the Bayrische Gewebemuseum, Karl von Stegmann, published an elaborate illustrated catalogue of this exhibition as Ausstellung von Arbeiten der vervielfältigenden Künste im Bayrischen Gewerbemuseum zu Nürnberg, 1877. The last chapter of the catalogue concerned modern methods of printing, illustrating the latest equipment, including new models of printing machines.
