Satirizing the Way that Railroads Were Expected to Make Horses Redundant

Circa 1831
Effects of the Railroad on the Brute Creation

I was pleased to add this satire on the impact of railroads to my collection on the Industrial Revolution. Based upon the style and names of the trains depicted, this appears to date from the first generation of passenger trains, about 1831.

This cartoon-like caricature printed on cloth was undoubtedly copied from a lithographed print entitled Effects of the Railroad on the Brute Creation. In the foreground we see three horses acting like street musicians, begging for money; in the background an indignant horse gives a hind kick to a passing train.
