In this 15th century image of a parchment-maker and parchment seller's shop one man is trimming the sheets into rectangles and the other is rubbing them down with chalk in preparation for writing. Behind them visible on the shelves we see rolls of parchment and packets of pre-folded sheets of parchment.

Perhaps the earliest detailed image of a parchment seller's shop that shows the way parchment was made and sold appears in an Italian chronicle in the library of the University of Bologna, designated the Codex Bononiensis 963, f.4. Christopher de Hamel reproduced this sheet in his Medieval Craftsmen: Scribes and Illuminators (1992) plate 3.
