In 1666 the catalogue written in Latin by physician Paolo Maria Terzago (d. 1695) and translated into Italian by physician Pietro Francesco Scarabelli of the private museum collection by the Milanese physician Lodovico Settala (1550-1633) and his son a canon of the Cathedral, Manfredo Settala (1600-1680) was published in Tortona as Museo, ò Galeria, adunata dal sapere e dallo studio del sig. canonico Manfredo Settala nobile milaneseManfredo intended to bequeath the huge collection to the Biblioteca Ambrosiana but the library could not accomodate such a large collection, and the museum was dispersed after Manfredo's death. It is known today primarily from the published catalogue.

When I wrote this entry I wondered why the catalogue was printed in the obscure town of Tortona. In June 2023 historian Giancarlo Truffa informed me that the book was printed in Tortona because the brother of Manfredo, Carlo, was archbishop there and possibly paid the printing of the books, both the Latin and the Italian translation. Mr. Truffa also pointed out that the Italian translation (1666) of Terzago's catalogue was followed by a new version with additions in 1677.
