John W. Tukey Defines Data Analysis

1962
In 1962 American mathematician and statistician John Wilder Tukey published "The Future of Data Analysis," Annals of Mathematical Statistics, 33 (1962) 1-67. In this often cited work Tukey defined data analysis as  "Procedures for analyzing data, techniques for interpreting the results of such procedures, ways of planning the gathering of data to make its analysis easier, more precise or more accurate, and all the machinery and results of (mathematical) statistics which apply to analyzing data."
