On October 30, 1869 Canadian inventor and engraver William Augustus Leggo and Canadian printer and inventor George-Édouard Desbarats published the first commercially printed photograph using the halftone process on the cover of the Canadian Illustrated News issued in Montreal. This magazine or newspaper, which was published between 1869 and 1883, was "the first in the world to consistently produce photographs at a successful rate," publishing more than 15,000 illustrations during its existence.
