On August 31, 1955 John McCarthy, Marvin Minsky, Nathaniel Rochester, and Claude Shannon invited participants to a summer session at Dartmouth College to conduct research on what they called “Artificial Intelligence” (AI), thereby coining the term. (See Reading 11.5.)
