The Nautical Almanac is Finally Calculated by an Electronic Computer

Having been computed by human computers since 1767, in 1959 the Nautical Almanac was finally produced in England by an electronic computer. Prior to the adoption of electronic computing, human computers in England used the latest technology available at the time: logarithm tables, mechanical calculating machines and electro-mechanical calculating machines. In 1959 the Office obtained its own electronic computer, making it the first part of the Royal Greenwich Observatory to use this emerging technology.
